Injectable

Depot Medroxyprogesterone Acetate (DMPA) is a hormonal injectable contraceptive administered to women every three months to prevent ovulation.

How It Works?

It stops the ovaries from releasing an egg every month (ovulation). DMPA also thins the lining of the uterus, which makes it unfavorable for implantation. DMPA also thickens the cervical mucus making sperm penetration and fertilization impossible.

How To Use It?

DMPA is administered to women desiring contraception during the first five days of menstruation or anytime the medical provider is reasonably sure that the client is not pregnant. For lactating mothers, DMPA is administered six weeks after childbirth.

What Are The Benefits?

o Provides a safe and convenient 3-month contraceptive protection for both lactating and non-lactating women.

o Prevents Iron Deficiency Anemia, ectopic pregnancies, and some forms of pelvic inflammatory diseases.

What Are The Minimal Discomforts/Side Effects?

o Irregular bleeding problems

o Isolated cases of nausea
